Evaluation.

How did you use media technologies in the research, planning, construction and evaluation stages?

Evaluation.

In what way does your media product use, develop or challange forms and conventions of real media products?

Evaluation.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

I have used the internet in different ways to gather feedback from my tagret audience on what they did and did not like about my opening sequence and what can be changed. An example of how i have done this that i have posted the link to my blog on to facebook and twitter etc to see what people think of my opening sequence so they can either leave a comment on my blog or on a facebook status letting me know what they think. Using the social networks such as facebook and twitter in this way was an easy and fast way to gather the information for lots of different people.

These comments below show that from what i have done in my media so far fits in which the 'norm' and means that if it was to be a real opening sequence people would watch it. It also allows me to see where i need to improve futher. These comments helped me to see that the colour scheme was appropriate and also that it will appeal to my target audience.

Another way that i gathered audience feedback was through a focus groups, this means that i have interviewed ten children in the age bracked of my target audience, which was 6-13 year olds and filmed the all asking the same questions. here is an example:

From asking my focus group these questions i have learnt alot, they have all said that my products is similar to other products around today and the childrens tv show that was mentioned was Zak and Cody, which has made me very happy as this is one of the shows that i had evaluted and looked up to when making School Daze. I have also learnt that not all children will see things in the same was as i have but through the use of mise-en-scene an idea was created that helped me to create the characters identitys. An example of this is that the majority of children i had interviewed did not find it funny that Razzle had paper thrown back at him they would have rather seen him act in a funny way, but from the previous scenes of him acting silly or dumb at the start not knowing when to go to lesson have already created the idea that he was a type of class clown, or 'the funny one.' All of my focus groups had said that they liked hearing the theme tune and that it had drawn them in to wanting to watch the tv show, as it was fun and bubbley. This has taught me that the conventions, such as setting, mise en scene, sound and editing is very important and not all of the audience ay have been passive and understood my prefered reading, but thanks to the setting etc, they did.

The final way that i gathered the information i needed to learn about what the audience thought of my peice was through creating a survey monkey, which was also posted through facebook and twitter to make sure that lots of people took part and filled it in.
Create your free online surveys with SurveyMonkey, the world's leading questionnaire tool.
This survey had shown me that my audience thought that my DVD, magazine and opening sequence went well togther and that the main strengths of my peice was the colours, the theme tune and the bubblyness of the charaters. Where as the main weakness and thing that would have liked to of been changed was that the editing didnt show the names of the characters as big as people may have liked. I beleieve this is a very good point as it would have helped created a personal identity more for the characters but the fact that each character had a seperate colour was good for the editing as it showed them all as individuals.

Overall i feel that my products have met the needs of the target audience well. In every way that i have gathered information everyone has said they they have enjoyed/liked my products. There are a few weaknesses that could be improved to make my products more appealing for the younger children, but i am very happy with how i have analysed simliar products and found out that the use of bright colours draws people in, and using this in my product has worked to my advantage as this is what made my DVD, magazine and opening sequence link togther and appeal to children to look lots of fun. I feel i have produced a high quality products that links in with my DVD and magazine front cover.

Research.

Introduction.

im working in a group with Jas Ford, Oliver Flitton and Anton Kavaliauskas.

We will be following brief 6.
in which our main task is producing the title sequence to a children's TV drama
For our ancillary tasks we are:
1) a magazine front cover for the series.
2) producing a dvd cover for the series

to start our project we will be researching into similar products by watching and analysing them to find out what the target audience like and want.

Analysis of magazine front covers

Tracey Beaker.

Tracey Beaker is TV show about a young girl living in the 'dumping ground' and this is a weekly magazine that is released along side the tv show. The target audience for this show is for chidlren around the age on 9 to 14, usually it is just for younger teenegers. On the front of the magazine there is a mid shot of tracey beaker posing for the camera in a childish kind of way. the clothes that she is wearing in this shot are fashionable for children/teenagers for this target audience. The pose that she is pulling is showing that she is quite a cheeky young girl and likes to get her own way.

On this front cover i have drawn the route of the eye lines. The first place that your eye is drawn to is the masthead which stands out from the rest on the front cover. Under the masthead there is a cover line which is selling the dvd collection aswell. On the top right of the cover it states which episode of the magazine it is. At the end of the 'Z' eyeline we usually ignore what is in this spot but to get the readers attention they have added a special offer in different colours to stand out. As a reader you usually skim read the front cover so to also grab your attention the small titles to each part of information is in a bold text to stand out and also in a different vcolour to the other text but still fitting in with the colour scheme. Having cover lines like "Dani Harper Exclusive." makes the magazine look more interested and will draw the buying in as it seems you can personally connect with this article. Also on the front cover it states which magazine part it is so that if you are a regular buying then you can keep up with what you have and havent got.

The colour scheme on this front cover is using light colours all matching and going together, this shows that the mode of adress is quite a girly magazine. That is also shown in what Dani is wearing on the front cover being quite fanshionable the jacket she is wearing fits in with the colour scheme but still helped her to stand out as this colour isnt used anywhere else on the front cover. The running line of bright pink at the bottom help make the free parts included in the magazine stand out, and the main title is outlined with the colour aswell.

Sabrina.

This is aimed at young females and is connected to the TV show "sabrina secrets". This magazine has lots of extras to attract the target audience for example, free posters, sabrina exclusives and added makeup to collect in each episode.

The colour scheme for this magazine is very simple yet elegant and girly to attract the target audience, this colour scheme is also the same as the title sequence on the show. The colour scheme is purple, yellow and pink so the colours fit together very well and the yellow really helps the purple and pink to stand out from eachother. The colour of the text is also the same as the colour scheme and some are white to seperate the important information about the magazine like the specials to that issue from the information about whats inside. The text used is very curly and girly also and yet again is the same as the title sequence of the show.

The route of the eye begins where the title of the television show is in the top left hand corner, so instantly the reader will know this is the offical magazine connected to the tv show. The route of the eye then carrys through a star in blue with the number of the magazine, showing that this is a weekly publication. Straight after this your eyes are draw to the mid-shot of sabrina and her cat which is shown in "sabrina the teenage witch." This helps the audience to connect with the front cover as it there is two characters on the front cover that they will be familliar with if they watch the show. The most likely place on this front cover that you are going to read and not skim over is the next stop in the eye line, which is the small bright pink box in the bottom left hand corner of the page which features the free goodies that is given out with that particular issue. The last place that your eyes are attracted to it this information about the diary in the bottom right hand corner, this is helped by the use of different colouring.

The rule of thirds is also used on the front cover as there is text along the left hand side in the middle third which is balanced out with the picture oppisite. Although you may only skim over the imformation here as it is not seen as important you will still take notice of this.

Hannah Montana

Hannah Montana is a tv show by Miley Cyrus which is about a teenage girl with a singing talent and double life, this inculded all of her fashion tips, gossip about her life and boys and includes lots of adventures. This is mainly a girl target auidence of girls and is around the ages of 5-14. This show is also shown on disney channel so has a large veiwing rate which is why the Disney logo is shown on this magazine.

The main colour theme on the magazine is the same as the masthead and the same theme as the opening sequence on the television show. These are the colour yellow, purplw and pink which are used the whole way through the front cover. For example on Hannah Montana her costume even fits in with the colour scheme, she is wearing a fashionable pink and brown dress to stand out. This showing how she is a style icon and idnt affraid to dress how she wants to set trends. The fonts that are used in this are seen as young fonts because they arent boring and are very clear to read, the headline is also the same text as what is used on the TV show so the target audience can generalise this as they already know it. This front cover is very energetic and fun with shows the mode of address for this magazine is youthful and fun to read. This magazine is also very girly which is shown by the colours scheme and what is write about Hannah. This front cover also has the Disney logo on it in the bottom left hand corner which shows the connection with Disney as that is where the programe is shown and this promotes Disney.

The route of the eye on this magazine like the others i have looked at starts which the largest text on the page that is the mast head and ends on the second largest text on the page as this is a dead area on the route of the eye that we dont really pay much attention to, so to make this stand out the use of colour is used. The route of the eye has a pause in the top right hand corner where Hannah Montana's eyes are, this helps the audience connect more and shows her blonde her which is her wig in the series show. Hannah is shown in a mid shot so the main part of her outfit is shown on the front cover, showing her fashionable pop star side, again. The next part of the magazine that your eye is drawn to is the information about whats in the magazine, this states that its all about Hannah Montana and her movie which will encourage the buyer as they want to know more about the girl and her life. The route of the eye then travels to the Disney logo, this is not just important for the target audeince but for new buyers as Disney has a very good reputation this may make they want to check out the magazine and see what Hannah Montana is all about bringing more publicity to the channel and the show. The rule of thirds is also used on this magazine as down the whole left side is the information about what is in the magazine so you may want to read all of this and helps the image to stand out more from the text. Overal this magazine is shown to be very energetic, fun and feminine.

From analysising all of these front covers of magazines i have found that instead of the rule of thirds for positioning the route of the eye ('z' eye line) plays a big part in where everything is posisioned on the front cover. Anoher big factor to help key things stand out on the cover is the colour scheme and text used. This is also usually the same text and colours as the actual TV show so that the target audience can relate them back to eachother so i will take this into account when creating my front cover. Also having a mid shot of the main characters on the front.

Analysis of DVD front covers.

Hannah Montana.

This DVD cover shows that Hannah Montana is for young people this is shown by the use of vibrant colours and clothes that the characters on the front are wearing. They are all dressed in a different styles but in fashionable clothes for the age. For example, Hannah montana on the front is centeral on and wearing very fancy sparkly clothes as she is a young popstar, lily the girl behind isnt the main character so she is small in the background with a longer shot, but is still wearing cool clothes just for her own style which is seen as being tom-boy. All of the posses that they are doing on the front cover shows that all of them are very confident young people which send out a good message to the target audience. The colours used on the front cover of this DVD are the same colour scheme that the magazine and the TV show use so that the audience can generalise this with the other stuff that Hannah Montana is generalised with. All of the characters are also seen as being very smiley and happy sending out good vibes showing that the DVD is fun to watch about there interesting lives all around Hannah Montana this is why she is central on the cover.

This DVD cover uses the rule of thirds for the layout more than the route of the eye. This is because the Title is right at the top in the middle third and stands out straight away more than everything else. Hannah Montana is also placed right in the middle collum so your eye is drawn here first to show her great sence of style in the lovely clothes she is wearing. In both of the collums beside her is where her friends are places so you look at these after his is also helped by the fact they have a longer shot and are shown smaller than Hannah as they're in the background. The 'Z' eye line is used to help draw attention to the small parts of information along the bottom of the page, they are also shown in a different colour so you pay more attention to it. The wording used also makes the reader want to buy the DVD more "sneak peek at Hannahs NEW LOOK!" shows that if you buy this DVD you will get inside information on her life that is only shown in this. The eye line also goes through he Disney logo to show the association with Disney the company and the TV channel.

Saved by the Bell.

The Saved by the bell TV show, Magazine and DVD is targeted at teenagers at high school, boys and girls. This is shown in the colour scheme by using red and yellow, they are unisex colours and arent associated with one particular sex. Also on the front cover there is an equal amount of boys and girls. Using the props of text books in this front cover shot helps show it is in school and all about the school life, gossip that goes with it and the mischief that the young people get up to. This front cover also has all of the different type of sterotypical groups of children in this show for example, the curly haired geek, the cool girl and the popular girl. This shows a good message to teenagers of this age as they are not bullying they are all in a group of friends togther.

The text used on the front of this is the same text also used on the TV show with the same funky colours that help eachother stand out. The title is also in a big bold different coloured text to stand out. The route of the eye draws you in to the title as the first thing on the cover but then pauses in the top right hand corner to show which season of the show this is for. There isnt too much information on the front of this so the target audience to read but the big picture of the front shows its set in a school. The way the characters are positioned on the front apply to the law of thirds as they are all in a mid shot togther even spread across the front with all of there faces in the middle of the magazine. There bodys are behind there faces but still in hot spots so you can see the type of teenager they are sterotyped as by what sort of fashion they are wearing. The bad thing about this DVD front cover is that it may not attract new veiwers as there are no tag lines that draw you in and nothing that will make you want to watch the dvd.

The suite life of Zack and Cody.

The suite life of Zack and cody is another Disney series about two teenage twin boys who live in a hotel and are very cheeky. The target audeince is for young girls and boys around 8-14 years old who are either interested in the series as a show or either of the characters as they all have there different personalities shown in the show. For example each twin, Zack and Cody are both completely different, one is more naughty and always up to something where as the other is very clever.

The colour scheme of the DVD front cover has no relavance to the tv show as the back ground isnt something which is included in the title sequence in the show but the title of the DVD is in the same text and colour as the show. The background of this is however related to the show in the way that it is a background of a hotel, it looks smart there are hotel like objects around the outside for example a suitcase and a plant. The costume that the characters are wearing on this long shot show there personalities a little more. The girl with brown hair (London) is wearing fashionable clothes as she is the daughter of the owner of the hotel where as the girl next to her that is a hotel worker isnt wearing clothes that are as glamourous.

The rule of thirds is used mostly for the positioning of everything on this DVD cover as the two boys are at the top with the position of the two girls head so your eyes are drawn in to there faces, this helps you connect with the characters more as you see there young happy facial expressions. At the bottom of the cover there is the title in a bold text to stand out on a plack, below this is the subtitle of what dvd this is. In the bottom left hand of this cover there is the disney sign to show good representation of the channel and help promote this.

After analysing different types of DVD covers unlike the magazine covers the rule of thirds is used more on positioning, this is because less advertising on the DVD is needed as it is more connected to the tv shows themselves. Colours schemes look better also if they are connected to the magazine or tv show, if not the text of the title should be the same as this helps the target audience generalise this with what they already know about the programme. They way that the characters are positioned on the cover of the DVD are usually in order of there importance in the show. On my DVD cover as it will be targeted at boys and girls i believe that my colour scheme should be something like the saved by the bell cover.

Analysis of childrens tv drama opening sequences.

The suite life of Zack and Cody.

The start of the Zack and Cody opening sequence starts with introducing both of the boys as the show is about there lives, firstly the boys are shown togther showing that they are twins and clips of them getting up to things that they shouldn't be. All the clips shown of them are in the hotel that they live in showing that this is where they spend most of there time. After having wide shots of both of the boys togther this then goes on to show the two boys both individually showing that they are both very different characters. For example on is seen to be very geeky and the other is seen to be more of a 'cool' rebelious boy. This is shown when one is standing on a stand going to collect an award where as the other one is seen being blown out of an air vent. The opening sequence then goes on to show the other characters in the series individually in order of there importance of the show. Second up is the focus on London, she is shown to be a very rich girl carrying lots of shopping and wearing lots of designer clothes, her hair is also done very nicely in a girly way to show she is cares about the way she looks. This is becuase in the series her father is the owner of the hotel so what she says goes. The third person introduced is the girl that works there but is very involved in the boys life becuase she is also one of there friends. She is shown to be of a lower class than London because she is always wearing her work clothes and fooling around with the boys, the other clothes that she is seen in are 'tom boy' clothes so when she is shown in a dress looking happy this enthisizes on the fact that she is only a worker because she is very happy to be wearing a big dress. Following this the hotel workers and mum of the twins are shown, there are shown as individuals but there are lots of clips with them and the boys because Zack and Cody are always around causing trouble and getting involved in things. When each character is indrouced to the audience there is bubble writing underneath the shot to say who the actor is.

As the whole of the opening sequence is shown in the hotel there background are very dul colours that are associated with the hotel like brown and green walls. This is how you can tell who is working at the hotel as for an example the man shown to be working there is in a green blazer.

The fact that the colour scheme of the hotel is matching some of the outfits of the workers helps to guests at the hotel and the people living there to stand out more, as shown in the picture above. It also helps there social class stand out as when London walked in her sparkly outfit stood out from everything else in her shot. All of the bubble writting with the actors names in are all the same colour to show that they are all the same and this doesnt stand out much from the background as this isnt seen as too important.

The tune that is played in the background is an up beat catchy tune that you would remember if you heard anywhere else. Using and up beat tune shows that the two twins have a very exiting life and cause alot of mayhem along the way. When the opening sequence comes to an end the music is stopped and the sound of a door slaming is heard this. This effect is very good and fits in well with the idea of the show. The last shot that is shown is a door with the writing 'The Suite Life' on a plack as if it was a number to a door. The idea of writing Suite instead of Sweet is very creative as it is generalising back to the fact that this is all based around a hotel that they live in. On the bottom of the plack the paper with the writing 'Zack and Cody' on has both of the boys names in a different colour showing that they are both very different but this still fits in with the colours scheme. The length of the sequence is a good time as it is targeted at a younger audience this gives them time is realise who is who in the programe and generalise this with what they are about to see.

Sabrina the teenage witch

This opening sequence has a very interetsing start as instead of using a character that is a person to start it off this has used a black cat, this was used as in everyday life as a supersition black cats and usually generalised with a witch, but in this series the cat can talk and is a character itself. This could have started on its own as this is a secret that the cat can talk and noone can find out this is why it is not introduced as a character individually. The cat is first seen walking fact a window which is in the sky and seen to be quite spooky. The shot then moves on to the title of the series with is 'Sabrina the teenage witch' the Sabrina has its own text from the rest this is showing that she has a life outside of being a witch as they are not both held togther and as in a different text. The moon is then shown passing which is something else that is normally generalised with a witch. Sabrina is brought into the shot woth a transition of using a glittery, magic-like dust around her bringing a long shot of her whole body into the shot, this is a good transition as it is not boring and like any others so it keeps you watching, also relating back to the fact that she is infact a witch:

The background that she is also standing infront of is a stary night in the sky and she behind her the stars appear to be moving, which is another witch like trate that she can fly. The witch is also shown changing clothes by using her finger for magic in the mirror. The opening sequence is only showing the main character which is not a bad thing as it does not give any of the story line away and also shows to the audience that she is a very independant girl and makes the veiwer want to watch more. The titles underneath her are showing the actors that appear in the series and are in a text and colour that stand out quite alot, this is helpful for us to see as we have not seen any other characters that are in the show accept a trip shot of the cat.

The colour scheme that was used in this opening sequence was very dark witch-like colours, using purples and blues and stars for effect. When Sabrina in first shown she is in quite stylish clothes and they are bright and light showing that she is infact a good witch, but the fact that she is using magic to change what she is wearing and stearing in the mirror shows that she may be quite selfish or vein and us her powers for herself. The way that this opening sequence finishes shows that Sabrina has obviously messed up one of her spells and jokes about this walking off in a lobster costume, this shows the target audience that this is quite a funny series and things may go wrong.

Lastly the theme tune that is used helps the audience to understand that she has quite and exciting life that involved lost of drama ad this is quote a dramatic theme tune. Adding the voice of the witch helps s to understand that she is just a normal teenager too and we can associate with her personally before the series starts.

Hannah Montana.

This opening sequence starts with flashing lights and the name Hannah Montana in flashing lights in a very pop way centered around a stage at all times. After this the first person that is introduced to use first is Hannah Montana herself and she is shown on the stage infront of the drums and the rest of the bands exquipment dancing so we automaticually know who the star of the show is. She is first of all shown wearing very rocky styleish clothes where she has her own style that stands out to what others may where, this helps her to be shown as a very confident fun teenage girl. The background that she is infront of changes to different clips of gigs with massive audiences with her on stage, at this point she is then indroduced underneath in the same text as what Hannah Monatana was wrote in at the start of the sequence. Before indroducing any of the other characters individually quick small clips are shown with her and her friends and family so before they are shown in the opening sequence and introdcued we know that they play a part in the stars life. The other characters are shown in order of how much they are shown in the series starting with her best friend who has a lead role. Lily her friend is shown in classic tom boy clothes and having fun with a bike hat on showing that she is just a totally normal girl having fun in her life but is not shown as glamerous as Hannah Montana. After this her other friends are shown and then her family. When her family are shown they have a background of family home.

                                                                Hannah as the pop star.

hannah taking off her wig to show her true self.

hannah as her normal self.

After each character is individually introduced the clips then go back to hannah montanas life and clips of what happends in the series. Half way through the opening sequence Hannah Montana is shown as her every day character Miley. This is shown by her removing her wig infront of her firends showing that audeicne that she has a normal life that we can relate to. The fact she is with alot of friends and boys shows that the series is going to be full of everyday teenager gossip and antix.

The theme tune that us used is a very up beat Hannah Montana song that describes the series and her life exactualy how it is. A part of the song says 'who would have thought that a girl like me would double as a super star' this is when the transformationof her to her popstar self is shown and we find out who she really is outside of all the glamerous outfits and fancy shows and lights. At the end of the theme tune there is a pause when the music finishes and Hannah Montana makes a 'shhh' noise showing that her superstar life style is a secret to everyone else she is living around which makes the series more exciting to the veiwer. Hannah Montana/Miley are also shown laughing through out the opening sequence to show this is a very happy funny lifestyle.

The colour shceme on the titles all the way out of this are in the same text and the same colours are used, purple, pink and yellow. The text all have small bright circles around the name as this showns the flashing lights and flashy side of her lifestyle. When the boys are introdcued the background changes to a blue colour showing that this can also appeal to boys as well as girls. The mix of clips through out also show that she is a very humble young girl aswell as being very famous but always stays true to herself.

After analysing all of these opening sequences i feel that when trying to appeal to all of the target audience is it best to show all of the characters togther before they are individually introduced like Zack and Cody have done. I think it is good that in Hannah Montana the shots always gone back to group shots of everyone togther inbetween showing each character and there is alot going on in. Sabrina the teenage witch has doen the opposite to this as there is not alot going on in the sequence but there is alot that we can generalise with the series and guess what it is about like 'teasers'. This makes use want to watch the series more, but i do beleive that this is for a slightly more mature audience. When planning my opening sequence i shall use different aspect from each opening sequence i have analyised to make the best use of the small time that the titles are running for.

    • have a catchy tune with no lyrics.
    • show the characters name not the producers or actors names.
    • Show the title at the end of the opening sequence fitting in with the colour scheme.
    planning.

    Story board.

Possible fonts for the magazine and DVD front cover.

    chalkboard font
    Desdemona font
    kino mt font
    OCR A STD font
    Hobo std font
    zapfino font
    impact font
    gabriola font
    Rockwell font
The font i have decided to use on my magazine and dvd cover is going to be Hobo st font. i have chosen his font because it will resemble the font that it going to be used in the opening sequence itself. This font also fit in to what the audience wanted as shown in my questionare as they wanted the magazine and dvd cover to be fun and bubbley. Althought this font isnt bubble writting it is still fun and child like, the curves in the writing stand out more and is more fun to read. This font is also in bold so whaever colour it is in it will stand out. I choose this over the other fonts because the are more boring and some, for example, gabriola font is alot harder to read.

Colour scheme for my magazine and DVD cover.

These are the five colour schemes that i had created from my choosen unisex colours or red, blue and yellow. The two of these which fit in which results i have collected on my colour schemes already would be the 1st and the 4th colour scheme and they are the brightest and would grab peoples attention more, the colour scheme i have choosen too use is the 1st set and this is more eye catchying than the 4th. Also this will look good on a DVD cover aswell as a magazine front cover.
